I once was God of that benighted realm
Where dead men's souls remain, bereft of fire.
That was a lousy job. I was relieved
When later myths obliged me to retire.
Since then, I've sometimes worked as metaphor
And not much else. I could not quite believe
When I was told that I'd become a world.

Cold, distant planet, you're my only home—
So your demotion cuts me to the core.
I called my lawyer, said "I want to sue
The name committee of the IAU."
His brief was brief. "Your fight is futile, for
Though Pluto's indisputable,
Its planethood is mutable."

Behold! An icon in my Shallow garb
With hat and cape, and smug expression fix'd.
No doubt preparing some considered barb
With which to twit poor Slender's brow betwixt.
Madame Director, E, prepared the shot
From Merry Wives, our show which starts next week.
I thank her for this gift; it is well wrought
And makes me seem more handsome, less a geek.
I'd link you to her page, but I dare not.
Her name's a dactyl, so it breaks my stride
If I should say it. Oh, I should care not
For rigid rules, but curse my foolish pride!

Perhaps the final line, as 'twere a bet
Permits me say at last, "thanks, [livejournal.com profile] lillibet."
